MANAGEMENT ACADEMY FOR JOCKEY CLUB RACECOURSES
As racing digests the first round of recommendations from Racing for Change, there are already significant initiatives in train which indicates that parts of the industry have already grasped the need for progress. One such example is that of Jockey Club Racecourses. Twelve of their middle management team, from racecourses across the UK, have recently completed a year long management training programme delivered on behalf of The British Racing School’s Management Academy by The Peplow Group.
The programme uses an internationally recognised diagnostic tool, Management Assessment of Proficiency (MAPAssessment) as a start point, to identify training need followed by a mix of individual and group development consisting of workshops, personal coaching and self study and finally reassessment.
The feedback from the year long programme has been excellent. Paul Fisher, The Jockey Club Racecourses Chief Operating Officer, said ‘“The Academy was intended to develop the skills of some of our most promising employees, instilling greater confidence in our managers and their teams, thereby bringing improved results across the group. The development of our staff, and in particular our managers, is key to the long term success of the group. We have been delighted with this programme. There has been a noticeable improvement in performance in all those who have taken part and already a number have gained promotion within the Group. It is also pleasing to see how their performance has helped others who work with them to improve.”
Rory MacDonald, Chief Executive of The British Racing School, added ‘This initiative and our partnership with The Peplow Group, has been a great success and we welcome Jockey Club’s decision to run a similar programme in 2010 for the wider Group. We intend to open up the programme to others within the racing industry in 2011.
